CODE OF ETHICS
I recognize the importance of consent and choices in all therapeutic relationships with clients. I will strive to provide a range of options from which the client can actively elect that which will serve their own education. At no time shall a client be required or coerced to participate in any activity, event or exercise. I will include education about consent and choice and actively create learning environments where clients are empowered to exercise these skills.
In order to protect the health of both myself and my clients, I will ensure adequate precautionary measures against the transmission of communicable diseases and infections. I recognize that it is my responsibility to determine that my client has done the same. I recognize the need for risk-reduction and to take steps to minimize any physical, energetic or emotional harm. Any break in the skin (abrasions, infections, rash, cut, etc.) will require rescheduling of any touch sessions, for both my own and my clients’ protection. Any sessions and all group classes will always include education about hygiene protocol, with sufficient facilities/supplies provided to clients to maintain appropriate hygiene.
The therapeutic relationship that I foster with my client is temporary, always within the context of therapeutic and driven by the spiritual, physical and emotional well-being of the client. This relationship can end if it is terminated by mutual agreement or if the client voluntarily terminates the therapy. Threats of violence, discriminatory jokes and language, personal insults, especially those using racist or sexist terms, unwelcome sexual attention and harassment will not be tolerated and can result in termination of the current session without refund. Should the behavior continue, then termination of the relationship will occur.
I will continuously allow a safe space for my clients to learn how to embrace and accept all aspects of themselves without judgement by maintaining strict confidentiality and providing them with educational resources and practices that are curated to their individual needs.
I will respect, defend, and preserve the privacy of all information gained from my clients and will only release professional obligations for confidentiality when there is a clear and imminent danger to individuals or society and then only to an appropriate professional colleague or public authority or the purpose of professional consultation with appropriate colleagues, if the identity of individuals are left anonymous or disguised to protect confidentiality.
I will recognize the boundaries and limitations of my competence throughout our time working together and when appropriate I will refer clients to a trusted colleague that is able to provide them with the assistance that they need while providing support to them during this transition.
I understand and respect the inherent power I hold in my role as a healer and will not use this power to exploit my clients physically, emotionally or spiritually.
I will seek the advice of colleagues or council as a routine part of my practice and continue to increase my skills and knowledge with professional enhancement. I will also foster collaboration and community in order to expand my knowledge of resources available to my clients and assist with reaching more women within the diaspora.
